What is Zone 2 Running?
Many people want to improve their athletic endurance, performance, and fitness. Of course, we also want to live healthy and long lives. That’s where Zone 2 exercises can help.
Zone 2 running involves training at a lower intensity for longer periods of time. It’s also referred to as “base training” because it allows you to develop a foundation for endurance while lowering risk for injury. Many athletes spend the majority of their active training time within this zone.
Here are some of the main benefits of Zone 2 exercises:
- Increases metabolic function
- Lowers your average resting heart rate
- Decreases blood pressure
- Mitigates risk of injury
- Improves insulin resistance in those who have diabetes or obesity
Your heart rate will usually be in Zone 2 when it is between 60-75% of your maximum heart rate (HR). Knowing your HR at rest and your maximum HR will help you identify what zone you’re in, but it can be tricky if you do not have the right equipment to measure your maximum heart rate. One way to easily determine what zone you’re in is by how heavily you are breathing.
Zone 1 is characterized by the ability to speak easily and in full sentences, without having to pause to catch your breath. Those who can speak or sing, but need to pause occasionally to breathe, are likely in Zone 2. If you have difficulty speaking beyond a few words before pausing for breath, you are considered to be in Zone 3 or above.
